Springfield offers a Park & Ride Jitney Service from the Springfield Community Pool parking lot at 44 Morrison Road to the NJ Transit Short Hills Train Station. As of August 2021, the daily fee is $3 per ride and monthly/quarterly is $50 per month. The Springfield Public School district has a long tradition of providing an excellent education and programs that are varied and intellectually challenging. With over 2,230 students, the Springfield school district employs an exceptional staff of teachers who work hand in hand with administrative, supervisory and support staff in preparing a rigorous curriculum that prepares students accordingly. There are (5) schools in all - Edward V. Walton School (grades PreK-2), two intermediate elementary schools (grades 3-5) at the James Caldwell and Thelma L. Sandmeier Schools, a middle school for (grades 6-8) Florence M. Gaudineer, and a comprehensive four-year secondary school (grades 9-12) Jonathan Dayton High School.
The town’s Jonathan Dayton High School ranks with seven other schools in Union County as one of the best high schools in New Jersey. A 14:1 student-to-teacher ratio offers students more face-to-face contact with their teachers. Enriching learning experiences are offered through the district's Gifted and Talented programs, school and district wide drama, bands and choirs, high school Advanced Placement courses, on-line courses, and exchange programs with local colleges. The district also offers Career and Technical Education Programs within our comprehensive high school, which includes: Culinary Arts (two or three year program) and Technical Theater (one or two year program).
On weekends, residents can be seen playing recreational soccer games on the green, traversing the historic sites, and meandering through the downtown.
Springfield has considerable natural beauty and 6,200 acres of parkland. Residents enjoy biking or strolling along the paths that meander through the woods of Lenape Park or walking the paths around Briant Park. The Houdaille Quarry, a former rock quarry, is normally closed to the public, but open once a year to the public to visit this ecologically unique wild area in Springfield.
The Recreation Department offers a wide variety of high quality and affordable year-round leisure programs for Springfield residents of all ages, as well as extensive senior citizen services. Programs are intended to support, regulate, and encourage participation in a healthy and active lifestyle; and to facilitate the use and enjoyment of Township parks and recreational facilities for the residents of Springfield.
Springfield opened a newly renovated pool building and recreation center for the 2018 summer season. The brand new 8,900 square foot state of the art building features a dividable multi-purpose room, a covered pavilion, new locker rooms, and fitness center. The building will be open year round for private events and Recreation Department programs. Outdoor amenities include a freshly painted main pool with a slide and diving board kiddie pool, bocce, horseshoe, basketball court, sand volleyball, shuffleboard and street hockey. Springfield Recreation Department hosts summer day and pool camps for children of all ages and year-round programs and celebrations for all community members.
Morris Avenue, which runs through the center of downtown is a good place to do errands — with a bagel shop, nail salon, dentist’s office, NY Sports Club, Irish pub, Italian & Chinese restaurants, consignment shop and old-fashioned hardware store residents can chalk up a productive day!
Downtown Springfield & the Chamber of Commerce host a variety of community events including festivals, car shows, 5k runs and more! Springfield Farmers Market is open for business annually every Monday from July through October and takes place on the lawn of the Springfield Free Public Library.
Springfield is home to the prestigious Baltusrol Golf Club, a private 36-hole golf club, founded in 1895. In 1985, Baltusrol became the first club to have hosted both the U.S. Open and Women's U.S. Open on two different courses. Among the many major tournaments it has hosted, the club was the site of seven U.S. Opens and two PGA Championships (2005, 2016). In 2005, the club was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 2014, it was further designated a National Historic Landmark.
