Mountainside

Mountainside is a borough in Union County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 6,685. With a modest downtown and residential streets stretching up the southern end of the Watchung Reservation hills, this borough feels like a detour into New England compared to the busier neighboring towns of Westfield, Summit and Scotch Plains. In addition to the small town sense of community, a big draw to the borough is the natural beauty of the area. Houses further into the Watchung Reservation sit on steeply sloping properties, which may be more appealing to urban buyers with backyards built into the mountains and lovely views including New York City’s skyline.

The Borough’s center on Mountain Avenue has limited retail, while the 2.7-mile stretch of Route 22 that traverses Mountainside has innumerous businesses & retail and a variety of restaurants. Mountainside’s offices and light industrial presence reside in the eastern section of the borough, and help to offset residential property taxes. New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Mountainside as its 9th best place to live in its 2019 rankings of the "Best Places To Live" in New Jersey and has ranked in the top 15 for the last several years.
