Rockaway Township

Rockaway Township is a township in Morris County, New Jersey covering over 45.5 square miles with a population of over 24,000.The township is home to the most beautiful and picturesque parts of Morris County, three beautiful lake communities, many small rivers and streams, miles of hiking trails, along with mountain ranges covered by many varieties of foliage and wildlife. The township is also home to Splitrock and Charlotteburg Reservoirs providing drinking water to the cities of Jersey City and Newark respectively. The township also houses the Picatinny Arsenal, a US Army base.

Location | Commute

Township commuters can travel to NY by train, bus or car. NJ Transit train service is accessible in a neighboring town at the Denville station on both the Morristown Line and the Montclair-Boonton Line. Lakeland Bus Lines offers bus service from the Rockaway Townsquare Mall to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan. Interstate 80 passes through the township, while US Route 46 cuts through the southernmost area, and Route 15 clips the southwestern portion of the township.

Rockaway Schools

The Rockaway Township Public Schools serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The district's six schools have an enrollment of 2,426 students and a student–teacher ratio of 10.731. There are five elementary schools serving students in Kindergarten through 5th grade, Birchwood Elementary School, Catherine A. Dwyer Elementary School, Katherine D. Malone Elementary School, Dennis B. O'Brien Elementary School and Stony Brook Elementary School. The Copeland Middle School serves students in grades 6 through 8. Public school students in grades 9 through 12 attend either Morris Hills High School or Morris Knolls High School. The Academy for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering, a magnet high school program that is part of the Morris County Vocational School District is jointly operated on the Morris Hills campus.

Rockaway Township is near lakes, rivers, mountains, wildlife, and hiking trails including Farney State Park, Wildcat Ridge WMA, Mount Hope Historical Park and Splitrock Reservoir. Splitrock Reservoir is 625 acres of wilderness in Rockaway Township that straddles the township's border with Kinnelon. The National Register of Historic Places include Split Rock Furnace and Ford-Faesch Manor House. Split Rock furnace is a Civil War era iron ore furnace which is still standing to this day. The Ford-Faesch Manor house was a significant piece of Morris County history during the 250 years that the iron industry was prosperous in northern New Jersey. The 1768 Revolutionary War era stone dwelling built by Jacob Ford, Jr. subsequently home of John Jacob Faesch who directed the iron mining operations which provided the Continental Army with ammunition.

Rockaway Township supports many athletic programs for residents of the community. The sports leagues are managed by volunteers and most have booster clubs that augment the operations of the programs. Frog Falls Water Park located at Picatinny Arsenal is by membership and boasts over 520,000 gallons of water adventures. The facility includes two high-velocity slides, six 25-yard lap lanes, a zero-depth entry leisure pool, a lazy river, and a child activity pool.

There are Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Thai and Indian restaurants from which to choose such as Caffe Nova, Luzzi’s Hibernia Inn, Thai Nam Phet and Riviera Maya. Rockaway Townsquare is the area's conveniently located shopping destination at the intersection of Rt. 80 and Mt. Hope Avenue. Your choice of retail stores includes Macy's, Lord & Taylor, JCPenney, Michael Kors, Coach, Lush, Hollister, and White House Black Market. The Cheesecake Factory, Red Robin and Chipotle are food option conveniently located here.
